Luke King-Salter
Acrylic on card, 14.8 x 21 cm. 2020.
This painting was inspired by Arthur Hugh Clough's poem "Dipsychus," a fragmentary narrative about a Faustian poet, whose name, I suppose, means 'in two minds.' He is dogged by a bourgeois Mephistophelean spirit (his bad angel or 'other mind') who mocks his desires and aspirations, while he drifts aimlessly down Venetian canals, feeling the world to be a hopeless abyss.
