"Mondestrunken" (moon-drunk) is a poem from Albert Giraud's Pierrot Lunaire, set to music by Arnold Schoenberg:
The wine that with one's eyes one drinks
Pours from the moon in waves at night,
And like a spring tide overruns
The motionless skyline.
Desires both frightening and sweet
Swim numberless throughout the flood!
The wine that with one's eyes one drinks
Pours from the moon in waves at night.
The poet, by devotion urged,
Made dizzy by the holy drink,
To heaven he enraptured turns
His head and reeling sucks and slurps
The wine that with one's eyes one drinks.
