Tartarus is one of the primordial deities of Greek mythology, and a deep region of the underworld in which giants, monsters and enemies of the Olympians were imprisoned.

This painting was more directly inspired by Jean Paul Richter's novel Titan, in which Tartarus is the name of a dark and mysterious garden estate, as well as Anton Bruckner's Fourth Symphony, to which similar adjectives apply.
